Glossary with special education:
PDD - Pervasive developmental disorders include five different conditions: Asperger's syndrome, autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD), pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDDNOS), and Rett's syndrome which are linked because of similarities between them.
Pragmatics – The study of linguistics concerned with the use of language in a social contexts and how people produce and comprehend meaning through language.
IEP - Individualized Education Program is commonly used in conjunction with special services or for providing unique instructional services for a child with special needs.
ADA – Legislation signed into law by President George H. W. Bush with a goal to ensure sure that no qualified person with any type of disability is refused a job or promotion, or denied entry to a public-access area
Section 504 – Section 504 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination based upon disability in programs conducted by Federal agencies, in programs receiving Federal financial support, in Federal employment, and in employment practices of Federal contractors.
FAPE - Free Appropriate Public Education, or FAPE, is a federally mandated educational right of children with disabilities in the United States. FAPE is guaranteed by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
LRE - Least restrictive environment means that a student with a disability should have the opportunity to be educated with non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible.
RTI - Response to Intervention is a system used to screen, assess, identify, plan for, and provide interventions to students at risk of school failure due to academic or behavior needs.
CBA - Curriculum Based Assessment is assessment that is related to both IEP goals and the curriculum.
KWL – A teaching strategy designed to help students document their learning that acknowledges students’ prior knowledge and provides for student input in their learning. K-W-L is shorthand for three questions posed to readers of non-fiction texts: What do I Know? What do I Want to know? What have I Learned?
MR - Mental retardation is a generalized disorder, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors with onset before the age of 18.
RSP – Resource Specialist Program is a form of special education available to students with mild to moderate learning disabilities who are having trouble in one or more areas of classroom learning.
SBIT - School Based Intervention Teams are comprised of individuals who work together to discover underlying reasons that a student might be experiencing academic or behavioral difficulties and to assemble classroom-friendly intervention.
