A free digital storytelling cookbook can be found on the web at www.storycenter.org or click here (pdf).
Great ways to teach narrative story writing. Build respect and rapport among students in the class. Break students into groups first by story types and then by the different types of technology they will use to tell their story.
Digital storytelling
Teach about story boarding first then going into the digital component.
How does digital storytelling deepen student literacy?
It takes a student's life experience (a moment in their lives, what they did or learned) and makes it better, transforms written text into digital form.
Active learning, oral communication blended with written.
Build a community, students share ownership of their work and contribute to the class.
It's fun and something they share with the entire class at the end of the semester or lesson. The students take pride in their work.
Ideas for types of assessment:
Integration of the writing along with technology assessments such as the examples below:
use dialog effectively
quality of audio
quality images
precision of digital editing
originality and innovation
emotional resonance
* Showing not telling
Have students vote for the best digital story and why they thought it was the best.(Will effect the student who votes, however, it will not effect the person they voted for) Email their vote to the teacher keeping it private.
Additional ideas:
Write the blog, and take 50 words out of their final writing before they do the digital story.
All about the thesis statement.
Everything has to illustrate the point (thesis)
Keep it real! Use example from your life to help illustrate your point.
Why Blogs:
Share with students building a community within a class.
Define old and new media from one persons point of view. (funny) video.
Help students keep their thoughts safe.
Ask students about the distinction between personal and private information within the realm of blogging and social media networks.
Then break it down, for example:
Show an image of a heart and write what students say is part of their private life inside the heart or give examples. Then list things outside the heart for blogs, social media (face book) to share.
Bullying on the internet, what it is and how to help prevent it.
Teach students to take ownership of their writing.
Respecting others, and their differences.
