Lesson on Cyber Safety 1-7grade to download the Word document
Mrs. Pike 4/15/2014 Teachers/Parents may use this as they like or change the lesson plan below
(The below lesson was give to 2 different grade 3 and 5 both went well the skit was a home run and fun for students.
Cyber safety for 1-6 grades lesson:
Ask questions of the students:
What is cyber safety? Why is it important to them to know cyber safety? The students will give you different answers: For example credit card fraud or something like it. Drill down the questions until you get to why it’s important for them to know cyber safety. (Getting it to their level and personally important).
Then do introduction video (the below is just one I found)
Intro video:

Set the stage: have an adult act the bad person and pretend she the age of the child but talk about this person is really an adult in reality.
Played a skit here where I will give clues to the teacher what sometimes most will know what to do:
Classroom teacher would act like she is on a game system talking or could by a chartroom typing but just talking out loud:
1. The teacher would pretend to be the age of the student who had never met the student but in reality is an adult looking to get personal information from the student and maybe get the student to meet up with them, in secrete. (2-5 Minutes)
2. Thank the teacher and the student volunteer.
3. Ask the students in the class who watch the skit what where some of the personal information the teacher (who was acting like a child their age on the computer/gaming) from the student. Have the students identify what they saw and heard. (list on the board or screen as students identifies each personal information). Then make a big point if the teacher (acting like the bad person) was able to get the student to meet up with them in secrete. (remind the students that the student was acting and the teacher is a good person in reality, however if this was real the person would not be a good person acting).
4. Point out (depending on level of students maybe handled differently) why it’s important not to give their personal information out to anyone with out mom and dad approving it.
5. (Photos)Do not post photos of them in front of their house (address or geo taking), or school or with the name of their school on their clothes.
6. (#6 is a lesson all of it own) If time allow briefly talk about posting photos of others on their face book and cyber bulling what is it and what they can do (tell a parent, teacher), if the student has a friends who is who is making fun or bulling another student or person (don’t laugh or go along with it, tell an parent/adult).
Rules

Where you might find online threats as a student:
Power point: 4-8 older grades below: (see below cert)
http://www.gcflearnfree.org/internetsafetyforkids/1.3
Leave time for Safety Pledge Certification
1. Have different students read it out loud (talk about each one)
2. Have them talk about it to their parents and if they do not have cyber rules what maybe those rules with their parents and why it’s important for them to follow these rules.
3. Have student’s bring this back signed by a parent /guardian
4. Retouch on the important of this lesson and maybe some good lesson they learned from their mom and dad that other student could learn. (Depending on the students and parents)
Certification is at the bottom for student to take home and talk with parents

Give out Safety Pledge Cert: Have students discuss this with their parents and return a copy of the pledge to school asking follow up questions (adapt to the different cyber systems for your students pledge)
